Women’s Healthy Weight Day

January 22, 2015 | Awareness (Week/Month)

A Healthy Approach to Weight and Body Image

Recognizing and appreciating diversity in women includes weight and body images and LeBauer Primary Care supports our patients living healthy lifestyles for a lifetime.

Health Education

LeBauer has provided education on a number of previous blogs in the LeBauer News on our website. Features have included articles throughout October for Breast Cancer Awareness month and more recently the health education blog on cervical cancer screening and prevention.  As Women’s Healthy Weight Day is recognized this week, LeBauer wants to promote an understanding of your healthy weight and not the media’s image, or solely based on a BMI or your weight when you step on the scales. Understanding your lifestyle, preventive measures, and risk factors are important to managing your health based on your family history and your current health and weight.

Establish Care with a Primary Care Provider

Establishing a primary care provider to assess your current health and weight and to provide information on maintaining and improving your health is the first step. Following up with routine office visits and/or specialists if needed and on an annual basis for preventive care visits would be next. Most importantly, you should not ignore signs that may indicate urgent and more serious medical issues.

Treatment and Care Options

A combination of treatment and care options recommended by a LeBauer Primary Care provider is a healthy approach to weight management and becoming comfortable with your body image and overall health.  A variety of approaches may be discussed and you can access your medical information and contact your provider easily with MyChart to continue to manage your health.

Living a Healthy Lifestyle: The Four Foundational Keys

January 21, 2015 | Awareness (Week/Month)

PrimaryCare_resizedThe message is clear: being healthy is in! It seems like every time we turn on the TV there is a commercial for a new weight loss program or gym membership. These days there is a huge emphasis on “eating right” and living a healthy lifestyle, but did you know that very few American adults actually meet the criteria for a healthy lifestyle?

According to a recent study done by the Archives of Internal Medicine, only 3% of American adults got a perfect score on what experts say are the four basic keys for healthy living, with women scoring slightly higher than men. So what are these, you might ask? The four foundational keys to a healthy lifestyle are the following:

  • Do you smoke?
  • Are you able to maintain a healthy weight with a BMI of 18-25 or are you successfully losing weight to achieve a healthy weight?
  • Do you eat at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables daily?
  • Do you exercise 30 minutes or more, 5 times a week?

In addition to all of these essential elements of health, our Primary Care team also includes sleep, making sure you get 7-8 hours per night.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can be a difficult task. Let the experts at LeBauer HealthCare create a targeted, easy to follow plan for your success and help you get started on the right track today!

Cervical Cancer Screening Month: Planning Equals Prevention

January 16, 2015 | Awareness (Week/Month)

New to LeBauerWhat would you say if we at Lebauer HealthCare told you that there is one cancer you can prevent just by making an appointment with our Primary Care physicians?

The easiest gynecologic cancer to prevent, cervical cancer starts in the cells lining the cervix and is avoidable with regular screening tests and follow-up. LeBauer’s Primary Care team recommends annual exams and screening tests for every female patient. There are two main screening tests that can help prevent cervical cancer or find it quickly.

Recommended to all women between the ages of 21 and 65 years old, the Pap Test (or Pap smear) looks for cell changes on the cervix that might become cervical cancer if not treated. To complete a Pap test, cells are collected and sent to a laboratory where doctors run tests to make sure that the cells are normal. Doctors may also perform a pelvic exam during the Pap test, which checks the organs surrounding the pelvis to make sure there are no problems there as well.

The HPV test looks for the virus that causes these cell changes. If you get the HPV test along with the Pap test, the cells collected in the Pap test will be tested for HPV at the laboratory.

New Year’s Traditions

December 31, 2014 | Community

Help With Your Resolutions

One tradition as common as making a New Year’s Resolution is breaking one. In fact, a University of Bristol study proved that almost 90% of New Year’s resolutions fail. The promise made for self-improvement and life-altering changes can be a lofty goal, especially without the right support behind you. Thankfully, the team at LeBauer Behavioral Medicine can help you turn your New Year’s Resolution into a successful tradition.

Consider a Tradition

If you’re not following the tradition of making a resolution, here are some other traditions from around the world we have found. While New Year’s Eve parties followed with fireworks and singing, “Auld Lang Syne” at the stroke of midnight may be the most familiar scene, there are other food and festivities symbolic to recognizing a change from one year to the next that have held meaning throughout history:

❖     Toasting as the ball drops in New York is recognized around the world

❖     Hiding an almond in rice pudding – whoever finds it will have 12 months of good fortune

❖     Ring-shaped cakes and pastries as a sign of a year coming full circle in Netherlands, Mexico, Greece and elsewhere

❖     Pork represents prosperity in some cultures in Cuba, Austria, Hungary, and Portugal

❖     Legumes such as lentils in Italy and black-eyed peas in the U.S. as a symbol of coins and a wish for future financial success

❖     Eating a dozen grapes in Spain and Spanish speaking countries, representing hope for the new year

Throughout history, any one of these traditions spoke to a hope for the New Year, as noted by history.com, and could make a great addition to your usual festivities.

How to Get Started

Making a resolution and recognizing traditions can be difficult.  If you would like a place to start with your resolutions, talk to one of the LeBauer Behavioral Medicine providers, and click here to learn how to make an appointment today.

A Holiday Poem From LeBauer Primary Care

December 24, 2014 | Community

Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house, the boxes were scattered, toys were sprawled out.

Manuals and instructions were waiting to be read. But in a great hurry, Santa skipped them instead.

Then on Christmas morning, children eager for the day, they ran down the stairwell – all ready to play.

When they began playing, their toys fell apart. Cracking and breaking, and giving mom a start!

Dad brought in his tools and began to repair. He read all the manuals and constructed with care.

Holiday cheer was restored all around. And the children were happy, they were now safe and sound!

Playing Santa?

If you are playing Santa this year, remember to take your time and construct toys, gifts and games with care! December is Safe Toys and Gifts Month – a season to consider that while toys can bring children great joy, they can also bring health threats if not put together properly. LeBauer HealthCare has worked throughout the month to promote this initiative, encouraging families to give age-appropriate toys and to ensure they are in safe working order. Christmas Eve is always an exciting time, but in the midst of parties and excitement, toys tend to get thrown together. Here are a few tips for Santa to consider:

  • Ensure toys are not missing any important pieces by referring to instruction manuals.
  • Discard plastic wrappings before Christmas morning. These pose a choking and suffocation hazard to little ones.
  • Make sure any small pieces are picked up and secured correctly
  • If a toy requires screws, check to make sure every area is tight and sturdy after putting it together.
Call on LeBauer

toy safety awarenessWe encourage you to share this blog post, reminding other Santas to take simple precautions for a safe holiday. However, if you do have a toy-related injury this season, always seek prompt medical attention. Call a LeBauer office near you for holiday hours and to make an appointment. Our team of physicians and staff wish you the happiest holiday and a peaceful new year!

Sharing Our Story

December 19, 2014 | Community

LeBauer HealthCare may not have existed if not for the popularity of silk hosiery. What is now one of the fastest growing medical practices in the Southeast, LeBauer HealthCare had a modest beginning. All beginning in the 1920s, when businessman Joe LeBauer moved his silk hosiery operation from New Jersey to Greensboro, N.C.

In time, nylons would replace silk hosiery, and the family’s interest would shift from textiles to medicine. Joe’s sons, Sidney LeBauer, MD, an internist and cardiologist, and Maurice LeBauer, MD, a general surgeon, started practicing medicine on the third floor of the old Jefferson Pilot building in downtown Greensboro in 1931.

Sidney LeBauer had three sons who joined the practice: Joe LeBauer, MD, a cardiologist; Sam LeBauer, MD, a gastroenterologist; and Eugene LeBauer, MD, a pulmonary and allergy medicine specialist. His fourth son, Sidney Jr., died of heart disease two days before he was to graduate from Duke University School of Medicine.

By the time the three joined their father and uncle in the 1960s and 1970s, things were getting busy, and 80- to 100-hour weeks were commonplace. “Our father instilled in us a love of medicine, and we recognized the satisfaction he got from his practice,” Sam LeBauer says. “There has never been a day I didn’t enjoy practicing medicine.”

Over time, LeBauer HealthCare has grown into a large multi-specialty organization. The goal, the LeBauers say, has always been to offer the best possible medical care to the community, and as the patient base has grown, the practice has added new physicians to help carry out its mission.

In 1988, the practice moved to the Sidney F. LeBauer Medical Center on N. Elam Avenue. Today, there are numerous offices throughout Guilford and Rockingham counties. LeBauer HealthCare also has been a leader in clinical research in cardiology, gastroenterology and pulmonology.

“We have been very fortunate to attract a diverse group of highly trained and motivated physicians over the years,” Joe LeBauer says. “We are proud to have played a significant role in the development of medicine throughout Guilford County. Our physicians are also proud that they have been able to work closely with many other fine physicians in the area.”
