Meet Psychologist Jenna Mendelson: Helping Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders and Other Developmental Disabilities
Psychologist Jenna Mendelson became interested in helping individuals with autism and their families through a high school internship. During the internship, she had opportunities to interact with children with autism spectrum disorders and their families. That experience led to her working in autism research, obtaining a Ph.D. in clinical psychology, and training at autism centers at Duke and Emory universities. Now, Dr. Mendelson is offering diagnostic evaluations across the lifespan, as well as cognitive-behavioral therapeutic interventions for adolescents, adults, and families at LeBauer HealthCare at Summerfield and Oak Ridge.
From Research to Serving as a Resource
“There are so many individuals and families in need of services for autism spectrum disorders and other developmental disabilities that I felt motivated to move from research to serving as a resource and support for families,” says Dr. Mendelson.
After participating in research at the University of California Los Angeles and the TEACCH ® Autism Program at UNC School of Medicine, Dr. Mendelson started her clinical psychology graduate work at UNC-Greensboro. She completed an internship at the Marcus Autism Center at Emory University/Children’s Hospital of Atlanta, and a fellowship at the Duke Center for Autism and Brain Development at Duke University Medical Center.
Dr. Mendelson joined the LeBauer Behavioral Health team in the spring of 2018. She says she feels like she is constantly learning from all of her clients. This often leads her to attend training events or offer new services to better meet client needs.
Parent and Patient Experiences are Important
The patient’s perspective is important to Dr. Mendelson. “Patients need to know that their input is vital to their care and that their viewpoint is crucial to the healthcare process. No one knows their experience as well as they do,” says Dr. Mendelson.
She encourages parents to trust their own abilities. “If something is not quite right, reach out and get help. You know your own child best.”
