Compassionate Care Began Before Medical School for Dr. Renee Kuneff

Renee Kuneff, LeBauer DO at Oak RidgeDr. Renee Kuneff, board-certified family practice doctor at LeBauer HealthCare at Oak Ridge, started gaining insight into the patient experience long before she began medical school. She worked as a labor and delivery nurse and surgical scrub nurse for 14 years before deciding to go to medical school.

“I wanted to do more for patients and be more involved in their care,” says Kuneff of her motivation to become a doctor. “I believe my background in nursing made me into an even better doctor, giving me insight and experience into the medical field and providing me with the tools to give my patients compassionate, personal care.”

Kuneff recently shared her career journey and passion for caring for patients with the Northwest Observer in a featured business profile (p.7).

Building a Bond with Patients and Families

As a board-certified family practice physician, Kuneff is able to take care of patients of all ages — from newborns to geriatric patients. She has been caring for patients at LeBauer HealthCare at Oak Ridge since the summer of 2016.

“Taking care of multiple family members allows a bond to be built between myself and my patients that helps me to more easily address not only current medical concerns, but also overall general wellbeing and health,” says Kuneff. “I want them to feel like they can come to me with any concerns and be confident they are going to have a doctor that will listen to them and make the best recommendations for their particular circumstance.”

for Staying Healthy

Kuneff says one key to staying healthy is to focus on enjoying life and surrounding yourself with positive and supportive people. “I encourage everyone to find something they are good at and enjoy and make the time for it. I also encourage patients to stay active and eat healthy, but at the same time find time to relax and splurge occasionally.”

In her own life, Kuneff enjoys painting as a way to relax. She also loves hiking and reading science fiction.

Travel is another experience that Kuneff finds very rewarding, and she has been able to use her skills on several medical mission trips. “ I have been fortunate enough to complete two mission trips to Peru and West Africa and hope to be able to continue mission trips throughout my career,” she says.
