It Only Gets Better with Age – National Senior Health & Fitness Day
When living your “golden years,” focus often turns to the more relaxing things in life and exercise may not always be at the top of your agenda. However, staying fit and healthy is as important as ever as a senior. May 27th is National Senior Health & Fitness Day, and at LeBauer HealthCare we want to help you stay in shape and get the most out of your retirement years.
About the Day
National Senior Health & Fitness Day has been going on for over two decades, always taking place on the last Wednesday in May. This year over 100,000 seniors are expected to participate, joining in activities such as fitness walks, low-impact exercises, health screenings, health information workshops, and much more! This year’s theme is “If you keep moving…you’ll keep improving!”
Why Exercise is Important as a Senior
Regular exercise may seem like a young man’s game, but the benefits to daily life and overall health are impossible to ignore. Physical activity has been shown to delay or prevent certain diseases and disabilities, and even improve existing conditions. It can also help to manage stress, improve your mood, and maintain certain aspects of cognitive function. However, being inactive can often accelerate the loss of independence, as well as more visits to the doctor, more hospitalizations, and added use of medications. With regular exercise, it’s possible to stay healthy and self-sufficient for years to come.
Tips for Exercising as a Senior
It is important to make sure you’re exercising the correct way to stay safe and get the most out of your workout. An ideal plan should begin with stretching to improve flexibility, increase blood flow, and lower the risk of injury or muscle strain. Once you’re ready to begin exercising, try to include both aerobic and weight training activities. Aerobic exercises will improve and maintain cardiovascular health and muscle tone, while weight training promotes muscle strength and flexibility.
