Cervical Cancer Screening Month: Planning Equals Prevention
What would you say if we at Lebauer HealthCare told you that there is one cancer you can prevent just by making an appointment with our Primary Care physicians?
The easiest gynecologic cancer to prevent, cervical cancer starts in the cells lining the cervix and is avoidable with regular screening tests and follow-up. LeBauer’s Primary Care team recommends annual exams and screening tests for every female patient. There are two main screening tests that can help prevent cervical cancer or find it quickly.
Recommended to all women between the ages of 21 and 65 years old, the Pap Test (or Pap smear) looks for cell changes on the cervix that might become cervical cancer if not treated. To complete a Pap test, cells are collected and sent to a laboratory where doctors run tests to make sure that the cells are normal. Doctors may also perform a pelvic exam during the Pap test, which checks the organs surrounding the pelvis to make sure there are no problems there as well.
The HPV test looks for the virus that causes these cell changes. If you get the HPV test along with the Pap test, the cells collected in the Pap test will be tested for HPV at the laboratory.
