Tips to Take Care of Your Feet When You Have Diabetes

  1.    Check your feet everyday.  Call your doctor/podiatrist about sores, cuts or cracks.  If you cannot see, use a mirror on the bottom of your feet.
2.    Wash your feet everyday with warm water and mild soap.  Do not soak your feet.  Test water temperature with your elbow.
3.    Soften your feet with lotion.  Do not put lotion between toes.
4.    Wear comfortable shoes, not tight or worn shoes.
5.    Never go barefoot!!
6.    Do not use sharp tools on your feet.  See your doctor/podiatrist about corns and calluses.
7.    Clip toenails straight across only. It is recommended that a podiatrist or healthcare professional cut your toenails if they are thick or if you have reduced feeling in your feet.
8.    Do not use hot water bottles or heating pads on your feet or legs.
9.    Take off shoes and socks when visiting the doctor so your feet will be examined.
10.    Do not smoke!
